Chapter 2

This section describes the later part of Sage Vishwamitra’s journey with Lord Rama, highlighting his actions in protecting dharma and preparing for future events.

Verses 100–130 describe Lord Rama successfully protecting the yajna and defeating the demons who attempt to disrupt sacred rituals.

Verses 131–160 focus on Rama’s growing strength, discipline, and recognition as a protector of righteousness under the guidance of Sage Vishwamitra.

Verses 161–200 prepare the path toward Mithila, where major events in the Ramayana begin to unfold.

Since this chapter contains many verses, only selected verses are explained in detail, while others are summarized for better understanding.

Verse 100 – Protection of Yajna (Theme)

ततः प्रभाते विमले कृत्वा कर्म यथाविधि ।
विश्वामित्रं पुरस्कृत्य रामो रक्षां करिष्यति ॥

Translation:
At dawn, after completing the rituals properly, Rama stood ready to protect the yajna under Vishwamitra’s guidance

Verse 110–Defeating Demons(Theme)

रामो बाणैरसंख्येयैर्निघ्नन् राक्षसपुङ्गवान् ।
ररक्ष यज्ञं मुनिनां धर्मसंस्थापनाय च ॥

Translation:
Rama used divine astras such as the Agneyastra (fire weapon) and Vayavyastra (wind weapon), releasing them through his arrows to destroy the demons and protect the sacred yajna.

Context:
These were not ordinary arrows but celestial weapons taught by Sage Vishwamitra. Rama used them with precision and discipline to uphold dharma and protect the sages.

Other astras like Brahmastra were also known to Rama but used only when necessary.

Verse 120 – Journey to Mithila

Pleased with Rama, the great sage Vishwamitra led him toward Mithila, the kingdom of King Janaka.

Translation:
At dawn, after completing the rituals properly, Rama stood ready to protect the yajna under Vishwamitra’s guidance

Knowledge taught to Lord Rama by Brahmins

During his journey with Sage Vishwamitra, Lord Rama was taught powerful celestial weapons (Astras). These were invoked through mantras and used to protect dharma and defeat evil forces.

1. Initiation into Bala & Atibala Vidya

ततः स महातेजा विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः ।
बले चातिबले चैव विद्याम् उपदिदेश ह ॥

Translation:
Then the great sage Vishwamitra taught Rama the sacred knowledge of Bala and Atibala.

  • Removes fatigue, hunger, weakness
  • Enhances mental clarity

अस्त्राणि च बहून्यस्य दिव्यानि प्रददौ मुनिः ।
संहारे च निवृत्तौ च तेषां चापि नियोजनम् ॥

Translation:
The sage granted Rama many divine astras and taught him both their use and withdrawal.
